Through our Young Writers-in-Residence program, we employ exceptional high school students–graduates of the Writing Club at Hart–to work in our after-school programs and mentor younger students.
Under the guidance of our staff members and adult Writers-in-Residence, the Young Writers tutor students, lead games, assist with writing exercises, and serve as positive role models. They work with staff to build their resumes, apply to jobs and colleges, and enhance their writing, performing, and leadership skills. Every youth who has been a part of our Young Writers program has graduated from high school.
Young Writers gain experience dealing with kids with behavioral problems, learning disabilities, and difficult backgrounds. They gain job experience in an artistically rigorous program. The program provides them with steady part-time employment in a time when it is difficult to find a job. Through this mix of experiences, teens leave our program as poised, responsible individuals with empathy for others and confidence in their own self-worth.
